The Foundation

It begins with an oath, not a meal plan

Unlike keto, carnivore or conventional veganism, this way of eating starts with an internal commitment rather than a macro target. The commitment is the golden rule — do unto others as you would wish others to do unto you — extended past our own species. Restated simply: do no harm, because no creature wishes harm upon itself.

The three axioms

Everything in the protocol below descends from these three tests, drawn from the dietary teaching preserved in the Essene Gospel of Peace. Ask them of any food and the answer is usually obvious.

I

Eat what is alive

Choose food that still carries life force — fruit picked from the vine, grain from the field, honey from the hive. Nothing that had to be killed against its will.

If you eat living food, the same will quicken you. But if you kill your food, the dead food will kill you also. For life comes only from life, and death only from death.

II

Eat what is abundant

The earth produces fruit, grain, legumes and greens without limit. If a food requires slaughter or scarcity to obtain, it was probably never the design.

Eat therefore all your life at the table of our earthly mother, and you will never see want.

III

Eat what is local & real

Food loses vitality the moment it leaves its source. Eat what grows near you, in season, unprocessed — and as soon after harvest as you can manage.

Eat not unclean foods brought from far countries, but eat always that which your trees bear.

A word on judgment. Non-judgment is one of the axioms this comes from. Nobody here is telling you that you must stop eating meat, or that you are a bad person if you don't. The invitation is simply to move toward truth — one change, in the direction of less harm and better health. That's the whole ask.

The Historical Case

The first Christians didn't eat flesh

This is the part that surprises people. Church fathers, first-century historians and early Christian texts converge on the same picture: the Nazarene and Ebionite communities around Yeshua abstained from animal flesh and from wine, and rejected temple sacrifice. The primary sources are below, with citations you can look up yourself.

Genesis 1:29 — the original prescription

“Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed… and every tree… to you it shall be for food.” Dominion is granted in verse 28 and a plant-based diet is prescribed in verse 29. Dominion therefore reads as stewardship, not license. Flesh only enters the biblical picture after the flood.

Acts 10 — Peter's own words

Shown a sheet of four-footed creatures and told “kill and eat,” Peter answers: “By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is profane or unclean.” Read plainly, Peter is describing a lifelong abstention from flesh.

The witnesses

Jerome c. 393 CE

“The eating of flesh was unknown up to the great flood… but since the flood… Christ, appearing in the fulness of time, has again joined the end to the beginning, so that it is no longer lawful for us to eat animal flesh.”

Eusebius c. 313 CE

The apostles “embraced and persevered in a laborious and strenuous life, with fasting and abstinence from wine and meat.” The father of church history, describing the Twelve.

Hegesippus 2nd c.

On James the Just, brother of Yeshua and first leader of the Jerusalem assembly: “He drank no wine nor strong drink, nor did he eat flesh.” Hegesippus wrote from inside the Jewish-Christian community; his memoirs survive only in quotation.

Clement of Alexandria c. 198 CE

“The apostle Matthew partook of seeds, and nuts, and vegetables, without flesh.”

Describing the Ebionites: they “abstain from animal flesh… and say that it is unlawful to eat meat, since it was not ordained from the beginning.” A hostile witness — which makes the report more, not less, useful.

Syriac Peshitta — Luke 21:34

The Syriac reads that hearts should not become heavy “with the eating of flesh and with drunkenness.” The Greek uses kraipalē, rendered in English as surfeiting, dissipation or carousing — a rarer and more ambiguous term.

Attributed to Peter: “The unnatural eating of flesh meats is as polluting as the heathen worship of devils, with its sacrifices and impure feasts.”

On the Essenes: they send offerings to the temple but “do not offer sacrifices, because of the different purifications they use”; their meals are simple, silent, and preceded by ritual bathing; they wear their garments until worn out.

Philo & Pliny 1st c.

Philo describes the Essenes and the Therapeutae as abstaining from wine and flesh, holding property in common. Pliny calls the Essenes “a race by itself, more remarkable than any other in the whole world,” living “without money” and “without women.”

Why it disappeared

The Gentile mission was preaching into a Greco-Roman world built on animal sacrifice and meat-eating, where the shared sacrificial meal was civic religion. Convincing Hellenists to follow a crucified Judean rabbi was hard enough; adding “and you must give up flesh” would have ended the mission. The ascetic strand was softened, then marginalised, and after Constantine it was reframed as heresy — the Ebionites and Nazarenes are known to us almost entirely through the writings of people refuting them.

On sourcing, honestly. The patristic quotations above are real and checkable at the citations given. Their interpretation is contested: most academic historians read the Ebionite vegetarianism as a sectarian development rather than as the practice of Jesus himself, and read Acts 10 as being about kosher law and Gentile inclusion. Separately, the Essene Gospel of Peace — the source of the three axioms and the food pyramid below — was published by Edmond Bordeaux Székely beginning in 1928, and its claimed Aramaic and Old Slavonic manuscripts have never been produced; scholars regard it as a modern composition. It is used here for its dietary philosophy, which stands or falls on its own merits, not as a first-century document. Read the sources, weigh them, decide for yourself.

Read it bottom-up: the widest tier is the largest share of your daily calories. Roughly half of what you eat should be fruit, honey and fresh juice.

The daily rhythm

The single most distinctive feature of this protocol is macronutrient timing. Carbohydrates run the day. Protein and fat arrive at the end of it. The logic: keep the body in a high-energy, fat-burning, low-digestion state while you work and train, then shift to repair and recovery before sleep.

A general guideline, not a rule. Adjust to your size, training load and how you feel.

In practice for a training adult that tends to land around 350–500 g carbs, 75–120 g protein and 30–60 g fat per day. Many long-lived traditional populations sit even lower on protein — the Blue Zones cluster around 9–13% of calories from protein, mostly from beans.

The one rule people get wrong

✗ Don't stack high fat on high carbs

This is the failure mode behind most “I tried vegetarian and felt awful” stories. Fat is 9 cal/g and clears the bloodstream slowly; carbohydrate is 4 cal/g and clears fast. Load both at once and you get a long, sluggish digestive backlog, blunted energy and poor glycemic control.

In practice: a bowl of white rice — good. Rice fried in oil with cheese and nuts on top — the problem. Pizza, doughnuts, pastries and most restaurant food are fat-plus-carb by design.

✓ Keep them separated

Carbs alone through the day. Fat and protein together in the evening. Each macronutrient gets a clean window, which keeps digestion light and energy steady.

Also: plant-based ≠ healthy. Processed meat analogues, vegan junk food and refined seed oils break the same rule from the other direction. Whole, organic, unprocessed is the standard — the same standard you'd apply to any diet.

What's in and what's out

Eat freely

All fruit and fresh-pressed juice · raw honey · wheat, sourdough and real pasta (Italian-milled if you can get it) · rice, oats, barley, buckwheat · potatoes and sweet potatoes · all vegetables and leafy greens · beans, lentils, chickpeas · seitan and tempeh · nuts and seeds (evening) · olives and avocado (evening, sparingly) · herbs, spices, salt · water, herbal tea

Leave out

All animal flesh, including fish and shellfish · gelatin and animal fats · alcohol · refined seed and vegetable oils · processed and ultra-processed food, including vegan analogues · refined sugar and syrups (honey and fruit instead) · anything that stacks high fat onto high carbs in the same meal

The optional tier: eggs and dairy. This is where practitioners differ, and both positions are respected here. The case for including them: if animals are genuinely well-kept — no forced insemination, no culling, free to range — then eggs and surplus milk are given, not taken, and they supply saturated fat, B12 and complete protein in a fast-digesting form. The case against: roughly 99% of commercially available eggs and dairy involve cruelty somewhere in the chain, and finding a genuinely clean source usually means knowing a farmer personally. If you can't verify the source, leave it out — the diet works completely without it. Vegans following this protocol should supplement B12 regardless.

The Reasoning

Why it's built this way

Four mechanisms do most of the work. Each is stated below with the evidence as it actually stands — including where the evidence is genuinely mixed.

1. Glucose is the body's default fuel

The brain and central nervous system run overwhelmingly on glucose. Muscle relies on stored glycogen for anything above low intensity. Ketones and fatty acids are a functional backup system, not the preferred one.

Keeping muscle glycogen topped up is also strongly protein-sparing: when circulating glucose and stored glycogen are abundant, the body has no reason to break down muscle protein for gluconeogenesis.

2. Thyroid output tracks carbohydrate intake

Conversion of T4 to the active hormone T3 is carbohydrate-sensitive; low-carbohydrate diets reliably lower circulating T3 and reduce resting metabolic rate. Since thyroid output sets the pace of the whole endocrine system, a suppressed thyroid tends to drag other hormones down with it.

This is the mechanism behind a counterintuitive result many people report: lowering dietary fat while raising carbohydrate can raise, not lower, testosterone — because the thyroid speeds up.

3. Digestion is metabolically expensive

The thermic effect of food differs enormously by macronutrient: roughly 0–3% for fat, 5–10% for carbohydrate, and 20–30% for protein. Every 100 calories of protein costs you 20–30 of them just to process, and animal protein in particular sits in the stomach for hours.

Energy spent on digestion is energy not spent on repair, cognition or training. Lightening the digestive load is the point of both the macro timing and the daily fasting window.

4. Protein needs are far lower than advertised

The fitness industry's 1 g per pound of bodyweight has no strong support. The best-known meta-regression found gains in fat-free mass plateauing around 1.6 g/kg/day (roughly 0.73 g/lb) — and that's the upper bound, not a floor.

In fairness: more recent meta-analyses (Tagawa 2020; Nunes 2022) find a smaller but continuing benefit above 1.6 g/kg, so this isn't fully settled. What is settled is that the returns are small and that training stimulus and total calories matter far more than pushing protein higher.

Where the population data points

Adventist Health Study-2

73,308 Seventh-day Adventists followed prospectively. Because the cohort shares non-smoking, low-alcohol, exercising habits, diet is close to the only variable that differs. Vegetarian dietary patterns were associated with lower all-cause mortality, with the association strongest in men.

Blue Zones

The world's longest-lived populations — Okinawa, Ikaria, Sardinia, Nicoya, Loma Linda — converge on 9–13% of calories from protein, beans as the dietary cornerstone, and meat eaten a few times a month rather than a few times a day.

Renal load

High animal-protein intake raises glomerular filtration pressure and accelerates decline in people with existing kidney disease; reduced-protein and plant-protein diets are standard clinical practice in CKD management. For healthy kidneys the evidence of harm is weaker — but the margin is real.

Two claims worth flagging. First, on fructose and FGF21: fructose does robustly raise circulating FGF21 in humans, but the literature currently reads that response as a marker associated with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, not as a longevity mechanism. The pro-longevity interpretation is an extrapolation, not an established finding. Second, on sugar and diabetes: whole fruit is consistently associated with lower type 2 diabetes risk in cohort studies, but that is not the same as fruit being a treatment for existing diabetes. If you have diabetes, pre-diabetes, kidney disease or thyroid disease, do not make large dietary changes without your clinician — this protocol will change your glucose curve significantly.

The Rhythm

Fasting: daily and weekly

Daily — the 16:8 window

Compress all eating into roughly eight hours; give the body sixteen without digestion. This is the highest-leverage single change in the whole protocol. If you do nothing else here, do this.

Practically: first food around 11am, last food by 7pm. Water, herbal tea and black coffee outside the window. Most people find the window easier here than on other diets, because fruit is satiating and there's no protein-timing anxiety to manage.

Weekly — the Sabbath fast

One 24-hour period each week, traditionally the seventh day. The purpose is as much devotional as physiological: consecrating a day, and building the willpower to say no.

Pick your intensity:

  • Fruit fast — fruit and juice only. Gentlest; preserves lean mass and training capacity. Best default.
  • Juice fast — fresh-pressed juice only. Deeper rest for the gut.
  • Water fast — hardest, deepest autophagy, and the easiest to overdo.
Don't overdo it. Fasting can absolutely be overdone — chronic over-fasting suppresses metabolic rate, disrupts hormones and menstrual cycles, and costs lean mass. If you're already lean, already training hard, underweight, pregnant, nursing, diabetic, or have any history of disordered eating, skip extended fasts entirely and keep to the daily window. Extended water fasts are not a treatment for disease and shouldn't be undertaken unsupervised.

Objections

The questions everyone asks

Won't I lose muscle without high protein?

Not if you keep training and keep carbohydrates high. Glycogen-replete muscle is strongly protein-sparing — the body only breaks down muscle for glucose when glucose is scarce. Multiple case reports and the meta-analytic literature both point the same way: training stimulus and total calories drive hypertrophy far more than pushing protein from 100 g to 200 g. One controlled comparison found a carbohydrate-only calorie surplus produced similar gains to a protein-containing one of the same size.

The honest caveat: the very top end of the protein literature (Nunes 2022) still finds a small additional benefit above 1.6 g/kg. If you're chasing the absolute maximum rate of hypertrophy, more protein probably buys you a little. If you're optimising for health and longevity alongside strength, the trade is not obviously worth it.

What about B12, iron, omega-3 and vitamin D?

B12 — the one genuine gap. There is no reliable plant source. Supplement it, or get it from eggs and dairy if you include them, and have your levels checked. This is not optional.

Iron — plant (non-heme) iron absorbs less efficiently, so pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C: lentils with tomato, greens with citrus. Menstruating women should have ferritin checked periodically.

Omega-3 — flax, chia and walnuts give ALA; conversion to EPA/DHA is inefficient. An algae-derived DHA supplement is the clean fix.

Vitamin D — largely a sunlight question, not a diet question, but worth testing if you live north of about 37° latitude.

Iodine, zinc, calcium — worth attention. Iodised salt or seaweed; pumpkin seeds and legumes; leafy greens, tahini, fortified plant milks.

Doesn't eating plants also kill plants?

Plants have no central nervous system and no brain, so there is no known mechanism by which they experience pain or suffering. They sense and respond to their environment — that's real — but sensing is not suffering.

There's also a structural point: most of this diet doesn't kill the plant at all. Fruit is designed to be eaten so its seed spreads. Picking a tomato doesn't kill the vine. And on crop deaths, the arithmetic runs the other way — the great majority of the world's grain and soy is grown to feed livestock, so eating plants directly involves fewer field deaths, not more.

But Jesus ate fish — it's right there in the gospels.

Two responses, and you can take either.

The textual one: the earliest witnesses to the feeding miracle mention only loaves, and Mark 8:14–21 has Jesus rebuke the disciples over the mystery of the loaves, with no mention of fish. Fish references appear unevenly across the manuscript tradition, in a Greco-Roman context where they served a clear apologetic purpose. Whether that reflects later editing is genuinely debated.

The practical one: even granting every fish passage at face value, no canonical text depicts Jesus eating any land animal — not lamb, not beef, not pork. If “eat what Jesus ate” is the standard, the consistent version of that argument is occasional fish and no red meat. It isn't a licence for industrial animal agriculture and three meat meals a day.

I tried vegetarian before and my hormones tanked.

This is the single most common failure story, and it almost always traces to the same three errors: not enough total calories, too much fat stacked onto carbohydrates, and a diet built on refined starch rather than fruit and whole grains. A plate of white rice with oil-heavy sauce, eaten once a day, will wreck anyone's thyroid.

The fixes: eat enough — this is not a restriction diet; keep fat genuinely low and separated, not merely "healthy"; make fruit, not bread, the base of the day; and get B12, iron and vitamin D tested rather than guessing. If your thyroid was already struggling, work with a clinician while you transition.

How fast should I transition?

Gradually. The gut microbiome that digests a meat-heavy diet is not the one that digests a fibre-heavy one, and switching overnight often means a rough two weeks of bloating and low energy that people misread as the diet failing.

A workable ramp: weeks 1–2, change nothing but the timing — fruit only until midday. Weeks 3–4, drop land animals, keep fish if you want. Weeks 5–6, drop fish; add the 16:8 window. Week 7+, add the weekly fast and decide where you land on eggs and dairy.

Is this safe for children, pregnancy, or older adults?

Well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets are recognised as appropriate for all life stages by major dietetic bodies — but well-planned is doing real work in that sentence, and the fasting components are a separate matter.

Children and pregnant or nursing women should not do extended fasts, and generally shouldn't be on a compressed eating window either. Older adults have a genuinely higher protein requirement for preserving muscle mass and should sit at the top of the protein range, not the bottom. In all three cases: work with a dietitian rather than a website.

Do I have to buy organic and local to do this properly?

No. Do what your budget and geography allow. Conventional fruit beats no fruit; supermarket produce beats a farmers' market you never get to. The third axiom is a direction to move in, not a purity test — and treating it as one is exactly the religiosity this way of eating is trying to get away from.

If you want to prioritise, spend on the produce you eat most of, and on grain — where sourcing quality genuinely varies a great deal.
